Beware The Cog

As always, life has it's challenges forcing re-consideration, growth and re-timetabling.

This week has been one of extremes... from family pressures, travel, expectation and research. On the research front nothing has been so cataclysmic than deeper thinking around where my own research is heading......with reference to where Leigh Blackall's is heading also.

Meetings with my Supervisor/s have left me with greater clarity and resolve around structures, timetabling, direction and the usual inclusions / exclusions.

For those interested and part of the Reference Group I've had an opportunity to order things a little with room to shift but it's a start:

Chapter 1 - Introduction - a chapter devoted to the state of art, the position, the defining moments which have arrived to inform the inception of the work - possibly begins with the application I wrote to enter the discussion with......
Chapter 2 - Literature Review - a comprehensive assay of why I am doing this PhD., comments on what exists and that which does not yet exist......a determinant in whats been done and what is yet to be done
Chapter Three - Methodology - defining the manner in which I'm approaching the PhD. and what will take place within the case studies
Chapter Four - Case Studies - At this point there is proposed to be three in total - one in the area of Cybercrimes, one in the area of Creative Arts and the other in Industry ( TAFE VET).....lots of work to do to get this all past Ethics.
Chapter Five - Reflection - a compilation of data analysis, associations and dependencies that have gone into undertaking all aspects of the case studies and perhaps even holistically the PhD. process inclusive....
Chapter Six - Implications - perhaps the most important chapter in the whole PhD.
Chapter Seven - Conclusion - self evident
Bibliography - extensive

Some of the things that were raised in our discussions which I'm now chasing up are:

readings around technology by McLuhan and Jacque Ellul
literature investigations with the Frankfurt School
readings around philosophy and the realm of technologies, sciences and humanity by Habermas and Marcuse
some awareness reading on TIA ( total information awareness), Google & the CIA (predictive analysis), Biometrics and commercialisation of information by Suprema and InQtel.

I'm at the point where structures around tagging and chapter shapes are important and it's time to write on this regularly and invite others into comment.

Likewise it's time contemplate:

time management - life / family mix
focus - answer the main question
build a network - join those interested in
connect - find ways to improve the relationship between surfing, browsing, reading and synthesis

....and now for connecting all that so our working domain benefits from all this too.

GPS E-observation

Sitting here in the ISTAS10 conference listening to a Speaker talking about the the use of GPS as an attribute of market research into behaviors of consumers of service.

Have been listening for two days about the privacy and security risks of GPS tracking as it's more commonly refrred toi.

I like the term 'e-observation' as coined by this speaker as it could well be considered in the context of location enabled POV equipment most particularly considering the advent and use of GPRS and 3G enabled two-way communications with contemporary POV equipment.

Perhaps in an educational context it better fits the opt-in option that these technologies could be prefacing for the user.

The 'e-observation' mode could be considered in terms of the validation of a person journey through an external e-learning experience ie. outside from point a, b, c.... This particular speaker is speaking to their methods of promoting this research by giving away free access to services in return for being considered selectively to to movement analysis ( tracking in other words )

I'm liking the idea that these location position 'how to's could be location enabled in a geo-caching context. Would a social networking platform that shows a physical journey then allow real time access to data left by users of POV along that journey.

GPS e-observation as an attribute for assessing peoples behaviours - location, time and multiplicity of actions....hmmm.

These guys are up for a substantial ARC grant.

Another piece in the puzzle.

I'm having a great deal of fun hacking this new Blogger template format to bits and finding out all sorts of tricks to turn things on an off. The whole format behind Blogger is so far more intuitive than it's ever been before and I'm enjoying it immensely.

It all mainly hinges on being able to shift the template around in the background as well as tweak some html and a bit of action script to get what you want which has always been a cool, clear and clean look for the reader.

There is information on a website that is accessible only by people in this building. We need to give access to a user in another building. I have been told it is about adding the user in the other buildings ip address to our server so they can access the info? Does this make any sense - can you point me to something or tell me something that tells us how this works?

I'm thinking the 'digital identity' part of the equation gets stronger and stronger as we find out more and more about the same space that ASIO, CIA and any number of others have full access to.

On Free Ranging

I'm taken to thinking about this 'free ranging ' idea that Leigh and I have been bouncing around with for what seems years.....true, I've clung to the belief that as a moderate free ranger that I could maintain a state of presence with minimal input.

Wrong.

Essentially free ranging is the concept whereby an avid blogger for instance uses a 'free' to the web service or product to meet their publishing or maybe social connection needs. Leigh and I have constantly picked on about the value of utilising such seemingly free services particularly in light of the constant costs and upkeep associated with say a dedicated URL and a control panel to implement things that are accessible online.

We all know that the free bit is highly questionable, risky, un-chartered, transitory.....and hence my obsession till now with the naming game.

I'm of the firm opinion that a URL or domain name that closely aligns a readers memory of you to a virtual location is of some value in aiding ( and perhaps abetting) that readers access to a smorgasbord of creations, interaction and contact. Of course, the domain costs money and in Australia you can pay upwards of $10 AUD per year per domain. That means if your doing a little consultancy work and your managing other Client's domains that such a cost becomes a standard line item.....and on costs to maintain it.

Of more interest is the idea that by having a domain, it then opens up possibilities to redirect it and perhaps even mask the URL forwarding address to the online viewer / reader / visitor. So that said, having a domain could well be about face-value ....well, value. An organisation of course wants to marry it's brand identity and it's business name to the URL even though it's common knowledge that many a successful business run websites that bear little resemblance to the original brand identity....and in many cases the website name may have nothing of any semblance to the true operating entity which otherwise pulls the purse strings.

Back to free ranging. An example is my own domain - http://www.alexanderhayes.com....currently in a state of flux as I transgress yet again and build another virtual castle in which to stow my rambling chattels.

I've had the domain name since 1998 and in many cases it's proven very handy for others ( and myself ) to know that despite the online myriad of places and space I frequent that there is a tried and constant crossroads for my contact details, what I'm up to and maybe even something of interest to follow up. It costs me $10 AUD a year to point people to a web presence that is the crossroads to everything despite my contact details changing, job or employment changes, home living changes, partner / wife changing etc. etc.

Till the start of last year I had paid anything up to $250 AUD a year to have my own Wordpress install with access to a Fantastico cPanel arrangement where I could start countless blogs, Moodle installs and wiki's which all required upkeep, updating, vigilance, spam plugin protection etc. Now that's where I'm heading ...the real costs of hosted and costly web presence.

Wordpress for instance requires constant updating and so do it's plugins. Leave them for a while and your inviting the world into your space to hack and spam it. Costly...time cost. Likewise, like others with a creative affliction I'm constantly changing the theme, look and functionality of my websites....more out of a desire for an aesthetic that people find appealing. Essentially. a total and utter waste of time. Look at this theme for instance....does it look like I took three nights to hack a Blogger template to within a millimetre of it's life ?

So....free ranging and conversely paid hosted web presence has it's upside and it's downsides and from 15 years of experience here is what I've discovered.

Upside ( versus ) downside as musings and self questioning which at this late hour will probably help.

I paid to register a domain name - what happens if I dont pay ? Obviously, free ranging allows me to forget about domains if I wish.....maybe I can find a free domain registrar...like hell.
Who is "admin" at the free ranging side ? Obviously the only help I'm going to get is from a machine.
Upgrades.....I can choose to spend hours upon countless and constant friggin hours worrying if my install is correctly cron jobbed and vigilantly protected
Can I hack the theme....oh...so I can ? Maybe that means I could also actually use widgets AND HTML without the worry of losing yet another skill....
Ok....so who really offers free online storage....hmmm.......yes those who also offer free proximal advertisements and most likely drill my data to within an inch of it's valid life
It's disappeared.....or perhaps that which I want to dissipate never actually does....like a FB account.
Is it free or is it a trial to entice me...get me interested.....reliant......dependent and then pounce.
Will it stay alive ? Both ways.....what matters most...will it remain ? Can I depend on it ?
Does it look good ....or is it to darned hard to hide the foundations....
Will it matter if I dont update, pay my bills or get sick and give up trying to stay ahead...

And so, I'm taking the plunge if only partially.

Here's my ten point plan for the next decade or two.

Keep the domain name as I can live with the cost and the stigma ( from hard core free rangers )
Free range my hosting because Google I love you and you know all of my indiscretions.....just don't murder me with them.
I'll be consolidating.....that which represents projects as an employee that require me to be responsible for constantly checking and rechecking spam be gone......toe the line. Leigh was right...who needs a organisational blog site ( likely to die as soon as you leave )
Strip it down....blog, keep a career check page, a CV, AV and a few more pages that allow me the freedom to delete more than I create.....I've truly valued the free hosting Leo but it's time to admit it's a complicated quagmire of FTP, lost passwords and ridiculous late night pleas for clemency on the Helpdesk queue
Diversify....dont keep my eggs all in the same basket....why should I ? ...after all it's 'free' right ?
Keep it open...where possible keep it in the open. Things that sit in the shade or dark corners disappear or grow mouldy....that is about trusting the machine ......yet keeping banking separate.
Mobilize it.....love living machine borg driven interactions....who knows, maybe it's a new vocation.
Let my online be the same as my offline....unencumbered except for children, family, passions and the odd coffee charged vice.
Let virtues run the program.....especially as a Consultant :)
Be free.

So, fat chickens...maybe it's time to trust that web 1.0 is over.

My children will thank me for it I'm thinking....providing they friend me first.

The concept of free ranging is sound, the practicality a logistical dream and the nightmare of vigilance seems a thing of the past. What I'm yet to discover is the identity crisis it may feed and the resultant mind / body / soul transformation I'll adopt to stay ahead of myselves.

All manner of them.

That said I best get on with updating this WP blogsite for work :)

Something I'm reflecting on at the moment...

Here's something I created in my head whilst driving to the chicken factory this morning.

I left home this morning a little dismayed.

I'm sure that " I'm a fool for marrying you " was just a joke.

I took it as a joke, however.......

I look for things to complement people on, likewise, if I dont have anything constructive to say I try my best to cease saying anything at all.........and yes I'm also known to be a little sharp at times and thats my failing.

The statement that love is an attitude is entirely correct.

It goes both ways and it's also a verb.

My threshold of tolerance for cold, dis-passionate pragmatism is tempered by the joy of receivership.

I dont want it to be removed from my love and friendships.

I wish to build a garden that I can sit and grow old within.

The investment ensures that the questions to answers are done so together.

I only wish to build a sturdy garden wall upon a sturdy foundation.

That much I've learned so far in this life.

I'm watching the winter Olympics with one eye, rocking the baby gently with one foot, tapping this in with one hand.

One finger actually.

Which brings me to Leigh Blackall's crys for help amidst his own baby carnage....and assertions that the institution is stronger than the revolutionaires. I'd imagine that it would be hard to accept that being one actually meant that you have to adapt to cage fighting when boxing and it's routines had humdrummed the sport of brutality into something less cogent and strangely now socially acceptable.

I've heard it said( and learnt the hard way ) that criticism is cheap and that shitting in your own nest is cheaper.

Likewise teaching...and learning or both or in opposite orderas the instituition might have it. Stack the chairs, file the students through the door, pat the backs of funny guys wearing feathers and gowns, pay homage to the seemingly unending array of compliance measures, benchmarks, deadlines, slapdowns and any number of ways to describe what to others see as their main opportunity to moved on, ahead.....

Rubbish....or at least now you've experienced what open everything might mean to those trapped in the pickled concoids of an institution, get on with better describing it rather than lamenting in a historical quagmire.

It's beginning and I'm not feeling at all reserved about how much hair I'm going to have to pull out to get to that beautiful, cogent and streamlined question that defines a Phd trajectory.

This morning I awoke to an email from a colleague who has reported and shared with the world his experience of having a body-double, a fictitious-mate, a humanoid thief in his very living midst.

As this is yet another example of identity theft within my own network and social communications group I'm sharing this further in the hope that it also alerts people to the growing number of body-doubles out there that leech on perfectly innocent people in the vain ( and of realized ) attempt to be anything more than the advantageous scum that they are. Given that this is the 6th example in the last two years I'm now sharing this with you in the light of shedding some light on what is a massive and booming industry with serious implications for the way that we authenticate with the big identity engines of tomorrow.

Here's how #### recounted his experience;

"I would like to share a recent experience I had with all of you; in the hope it raises your awareness to the threat of identity theft.

I am currently engaged in selling a property and buying a new property. A pre-requisite of refinancing, as most of you would be aware of, is the simple process of having a credit check completed against the borrowers. It came as a very big shock to me, to learn that I had a double, which supposedly lived in the Northern suburbs of Wollongong, and shared my birth date and drivers licencenumber. Even more disturbing was that my double had created mobile phone accounts with one of the larger Telco companies and defaulted in mid 2007. This obviously put the purchase of the new house in jeopardy and placed an enormous amount of stress and anxiety on my family.

The initial steps of attempting to sort it out were painful and frustrating, particularly given the bureaucratic crap I endured with the Telco Company. Eventually after reporting it to the police, consultation with a solicitor, and taking it to my local Federal member, and lodging a complaint with the tele-communication ombudsman, I was able to talk with someone from Telstra who possessed some logic and common sense. Fortunately they were quickly able to prove I was not at fault, and was a victim of identity theft, and my name was removed from the default list within three days of learning I had a false double. This enabled the sale and purchase to proceed.

My advice is to:

Request a credit check every 12 months to be run against yourself. This will highlight if there is another you at a dummy address.
Buy a shredder, and shred everything.
When you provide personal details pertaining to the opening of new accounts, mobile phones e.t.c. Ask for and record the employee id numbers and names of the sales assistant, and any other person they converse with when activating the phone e.t.c.
Unplug your communication from your modem every night. They come through the cable at night when you are asleep and turn the computer on, and retrieve any information they require.
When you are on any secure site, such as a banking domain, don't ever click on an external link.
Get a PO Box and re-direct some of your mail to the PO Box, or padlock your letter box.
Do not respond to text messages from your partner’s phone requesting PIN numbers, this generally means they have just had their wallet and phone stolen.
Don’t share too much information on social networking sites, such as birth dates e.t.c.

Pass this on to your own family and friends. The credit check every 12 months is very important, which will provide a form of monitoring of potential identity fraud......."

What a classic diagrammatic overture incomplete with any semblance of connection between the artifact repository and that of cloud based publishing. Where are the swarming body-worn mobile repositories of a meshed network and interconnected global network that makes up the mobile learning ecosphere ?

Yes....another late entry as I meander through Leigh Blackall's struggle via the Reverend with credits where credits are due and Johnathon Mott's EDUCause paper on envisioning something beyond the architectures of learning commodification.

It strikes me as I prepare this Phd application that I'm probably positioned to be agreeing with the matter of factness of an academic register for the refreshing array of ways to say the same thing complete with it's reinforcement of semantics for correct referencing register whilst disagreeing with the need for a populist approach to redeem credits where credits are due from a personal politic perspective.

Questions I'm asking myself include;

How many isms should I be bookmarking in a bid to understand the human condition of needing credit ?;
Is the history tab enough ?
Does the LMS actually have any future in a (open) learning network ?
Can the simple act of sharing knowledge be such a bad thing ?

Probably best I keep writing this open prose on why I'm examining the implications of geo-data enabled body worn technologies on educational organisational futures policy.

That is what I'm feeling.

It was my 41st birthday today.

Jane, my beautiful wife, Ethan my gorgeous boy and our chubbynewborngiftfromgod, Eamon and I all went to the park after liberal doses of pancakes smothered in butter and Wild Rosella jam. After a nice call from my darling middle daughter Amelia we ventured into what is to be the rest of my life.

My eldest daughter ( yes...thats right, I have 4 children) is sure to say hello in Facebook as any 19 year old would. I would have :)

So......dinner with friends Mitchell, Tavia and their little son Noah as well as Geoff Lubich, man mountain, business partner and tech confidant all chowed into rare rump, poppyseed cake and potato bake.

Whats happening now ?

Thinking about how to get this Phd application form filled in. Curious as to whether Katina actually exists or is merely a figment of my imagination. Kind of suprised with Bill Wade's response to my espousing my endeavours.

Getting braver at writing into the ether knowing that this is where I'll be getting most of my future work done.

Dear Alexander

Webadmin are combing through all new content that’s contributed to the Framework website, as part of quality assurance for web accessibility guidelines we have to adhere to. The types of things we are checking are alternative text, whether or not links directing to other pages or documents are opening in the same window or new windows and spelling and grammar.

We have noted that the page created by Alexander Hayes on 23 February 2010 titled De-activating Alpha Trials has the following issues that need fixing:

Image at the top of the page
o   Alternative text to be added in the Image Properties

o   Link target should be a new window as the image is linking to an image outside the Framework website

number of Framework staff
o   Target should be same window as it is linking to a page on the Framework website

o   Advisory title/alternative text needs to be added

Webadmin have made these changes for you. We are currently creating Tips and Hints which will provide information on how to make your content more accessible. You will be able to find these in the Webadmin group in the near future.

Today, amidst the cacophany of travel, work and life I made the decision to embark on the next part of the journey into valuable and meaningful ways to employ new and (pervasive) emergent technologies in an education, training and broader socio-creative context.

After some very valuable discussions with friends and colleagues over the last few years it's evident that further tertiary studies are becoming critical to informing my professional, employment practice as an educator, employment potential as an Operations Manager, strength as a Father of four beautiful children and trust in others as I honestly address and build things as I do best.

In this location, my clearing house of web wide engagement..... I'm declaring at this late hour tonight that I have commenced a Phd.

The whom, how, where,what and why will surface in these notes-to-self as it becomes clearer.

We've expended the $3000 wedding money on stone lookalike bricks, concrete and a whole heap of happy brick laying.

YouTube is full of excellent teaching resources. And with YouTube now part of Google it has much stronger safe search features which we have been able to enable within the department.

1. If a staff member has been to one of these locations and has been mixing with local school children (in a group of 10 or more) then they should be excluded from work. College Directors and Functional Unit managers should make every effort to enable these staff to perform some work from home during their exclusion.
2. If the staff member has not mixed with a group of 10 or more school children then they may return to work, but be excluded if they develop any influenza-like symptoms.
3. If a member of staff is currently excluded because they have travelled to one of the infected locations, but have not mixed with a group of 10 or more local school children, they may now return to work as long as they are not displaying any flu-like symptoms.
4. If they have been directed into quarantine by NSW Health they must complete the quarantine period...."

The title leaves me wanting to know more:

The description was just as commanding:

After a long consoling Gmail chat with Bee today I'm feeling a little lighter in load when comparing it to the heavy heart I had driving through thick fog over hill and dale to get to work this morning.

Perhaps the 4 AM forced start didnt help nor the weak McDonalds coffee heading down the freeway. Or maybe it was the sheer terror of not making it to the end of the financial year that was striking home.

Bee has mooted that perhaps it's a time for contemplation rather than frantic action following indication that I was not successful with my application for CE Innovations Coordinator with the Framework. I was interviewed, left happy with my performance and awaited the political fallout.

The best person was chosen for the job.

Now I must move on.

So the plan of action may look like as follows;

get some sleep
prioritise family
go to the gym - 15 mins once a month is not enough
play golf more often on a wider selection of golf courses
drink less - maybe that should be, drink more but selectively including water into the list of beverages
throw out my black shirts and replace them with moderate & neutral business shirts
consider that adding extensions to the house needs a plan of action first as well as saved finances
base work around the fact I live in Orange, NSW, Australia not downtown Paris, New York or Sydney
use my skills strategically - dont accept employment that compromises them
breathe more often
value my online networks by partcipating authentically and poignantly
accept that sometimes it time to be quiet

I'll begin with the first point in the list of things to do.

I appreciate your comment. I dont think I’m developing a heavy heart, more a realistic insight into just how challenging it’s going to be living and working in a country location. Still…….the city is not to far away and I have many people in my network such as yourself to communicate with. What about you ? What’s been happening in your part of the world mate ? It seems like such a long period of time since we met in that bar in the Pilbara….heady days they were…….not fraught with economic downturn rhetoric…

Wedding Speech

To ensure I call people the correct names and mix up things only slightly I'm reading a prepared speech that my personal secretary assures me makes sense even if we did complete it together at three thirty am this morning.

Lets begin.

I would like firstly to thank each and everyone of you for travelling to celebrate our wedding.

Jane and I truly appreciate you being here here today and tonight and hope that you enjoy this time with your extended family ......because that's what this is all about.

I have one person who I'd like to acknowledge now who has been instrumental in ensuring this occasion ( and many others ) has been possible - Judy Rogan. Judy has worked tirelessly over the last weeks and many months to ensure Jane and I have been able to do all we needed to do to bring this all together.

On that note and as Jane will concur, I am the easiset person to live with and as my immediate family also know my life has been one of the most uncomplicated in comparison to many of my friends and extended family members.

On a more serious note, I would like to bring to you an excerpt from a telegram I received a short while ago from a dear friend Raelee Golding who unfortunatley wasnt able to join us today.

Raelee wrote;

"......I just want to say that you have been a dear and treasured friend to Craig and I, spanning a good many years, and a whole heap of ups and downs!

This is the mark of a true friend and I count you amongst my truest friends.

With Craig by my side I do not doubt that we would be there with you celebrating a pivotal moment in your life ......with some cracking dance moves and too many drinks.

Sadly I am still finding my way in the simplest of tasks now that he is no longer with us, and feel unable to make the journey.

I know you will understand! He loved you so very much and I know if he were here he would wish you heartfelt congratulations and mirth and merriment on this momentous occasion!

I wish you both a long and prosperous exchange with one another, culminating in a life of abundance and joy in each other and your beautiful little boy Ethan!...."

Well, luckily I asked Phil for Jane's hand in marraige long before Ethan, our beautiful son was ever thought of and travelling from the big smoky city to Ungarie in rural Australia was the best thing I have ever done......even if I did get the ute bogged and took one too many photos as a roustabout badging me as the tourist .......much like the same route I take when playing golf.

So....... Jane and I settled half way in Orange so now the city-boy-meets-country-gal moniker is no longer used to describe our union.

And it is that union which I would like to speak about now that means the most to me and I'm sure by you also. I am the luckiest guy in the world .......to have met my match in kitchen renovations, in appreciation of Shakespearean anecdotes and amongst our undying love for...... rum and coke on cold winter nights.

I'm sure you will agree Jane looked every bit the princess today...... that has met her dashing tall dark and handsome knight. I've replaced my steed with and equally fit Mazda Bravo ute and together we shall ride off into the sunset together .....forever....and have hundreds of children as our Scottish / Irish heritage ....and genes would allow.

I've been instructed to keep this speech to a five minute limit and therefore with 30 seconds to spare I'd like to conclude with the following.

Jane looked ravishing today and I will treasure this precious time with you all for the rest of my life. Jane is the most adorable and loving person I could have ever hoped to meet to share my life with. I am the luckiest guy alive to have stepped off a plane and been part of a match-making episode made in heaven.

Jane and I will travel together knowing that you and all our extended families and treasured friends will travel with us and on that journey we will grow to love and appreciate all there is to appreciate that love and friendships ensure.

Thankyou......and lets cut the cake :)

POV : Worth The Effort ?

I dont get much of a chance of late to be writing in this blog.

Only occasionally at the moment are light moments emerging.

Life is very busy but that's nothing new. Most of my time I'm plowing into the whole POV concept and the affiliation I'm making at considerable risk via the EDUPOV website.

Is it all worth it ?

Too right it is. Countless hours, but at the nub of everything I thinks is worth while...of value and on the practical front...do-able.

Essentially I'm keen to see more teachers openly share learning resources that are core, to the point and raw ....as it is. I really am not interested in the "quality" unless the access, readability or transferability from generation to generation of digital data is compromised. Nor am I interested in the petty excuses that making an effort to learn what the technology works might mean actually learning something for those that have got their hands on a kit or two.

Pull your finger out. Stop waving smelly integers at your students and actually create something of consequence or be accused of being anything more than redundant.

Not asking a lot am I ?

At substantial expense Geoff , Leo, Craig and I have invested in Leigh Blackall giving his two bob's worth about where POV fits into his present paradigm. Has it been worth the effort or would we have been better of investing in some cutting edge POV and charging through the nose for others to access it ?

He claims he feels like a bought man. Couldn't be further form the truth.

Would be, if all it's for is to bolster stroking the edublogger dead white philosophers gravy train .......but that's what it seems to take others to remain seen on the web.

Besides, I'd like to introduce him to a few old mates at the wedding.

I'm over the whole discussion that POV should be recoined to something other than referencing POV because porn has the biggest presence using such nomeclature. Seriously Allison.....leave it alone.

Not likely to see CogDog say much on the topic above but thats not suprising either. He's flat out chasing tags.....like we will sooner than later.

It's just another emerging technology right ?

Wondering how I'm feeling about it at the moment....a tad swamped me thinks.

As your probably well aware I've been of late following with interest the FOC08 course that Leigh Blackall has up and running using Wikieducator and Google group as base.

You've probably also been having a look at the blog I built the other week there over at AUSETRAINING which Geoff and I are using to showcase great video's using either digital stories or POV equipment ; both of which in some go a long way to 'telling' the story of what it means to be down on the shop floor doing good things with user generated video.

Today Sparker sent me a short Blip file which I've popped up into the AUSETRAINING site for a bit of a showcase and also sent me some leads to follow up on with respect to all things Moodle and so on - one of which is the ever expanding Kaltura video site.

Re-assembling Education : Blogging for Escape

It's a dilemna for all educators alike , whether they call themselves teachers, trainers or facilitators to remain true ( and ethically bound ) to their form and function in the community while retaining some semblance of reality around their progressive online outpourings ( no one in the supermarket knows your a web 2.0 teacher....yet )

The reason I say this is that it would be nice to nominated by your peers for your efforts provided your blog didnt appear in this list.

Extending on that.....wouldnt it be good to show a little humanity and mud amongst the waterfights. Drinking too much at the party. Riching out of literature that's got one too many pictures. Laughing in staff meetings and forgetting to hand in your timesheets.

I'm writing this cause' I'm concerned lately that a number of online colleagues ( the majority whom I'm yet to meet ) feel that making sure they have enough content to garnish their links is the way to go. That each post must follow the other in theme, that the dots have been dotted and that none of the scribblings go outside of the black lines. That the the trackbacks and the pings will bring them greatness and adoration.

In a time and age when the boss admits he stumbled as a lad and has paid his dues. Where vast collectives of grey nomads congregate at inter-state functions stuffing their handbags full of party pies. Amongst countless spirit crushing meetings designed to cause the most amount of morale heartache and bewilderment. Waking up to more timetables, and uniform checks and yard duty and rolls upon rolls upon rolls.

Spitting and late assigments and failed logins and PD and CD and LD and other forms of useless expert centred professional servitude. To start with.

I think we need to get back to the question of what is a blog and wait for it.....what is a wiki ?

Are we as educators just hijacking these forms we flounder around within and force learners to engage in slippery conversations in the hope that we selfishly know best ? I'm trying to answer this question as much as you could consider to do so if you could be bothered.

Are we human too and how would our learners know so from our ramblings ? How would we explain to the family if we had been nomiated for the most boring blog of all time ?

What entertains me is the idea that some bloggers think that comment moderation prevents the world knowing of others comments until such time as they are released.

It's a bit like making a phone call and thinking that only the person you rang and yourself are the only one's involved in the conversation....

What's the difference apart from names and geographical location ?

Oh....and for those still searching for connections between both peoples plight preface your reading with more from Michelle Malkin.

I'm disgusted with some of the most vile forms of heirachy descending around friends and colleagues who cower in fear at the threats and misogynist gesticulations from online animals who get great pleasure from watching the results of their dangeorus rhetoric.

I'm also amazed at the architecture that supports such behaviour. The skeletons and the musty cupboards and the veiled threats are equally distributed from the very forms which nurture and nourish conversation : connection : collaboration.

The open web is a complicated space. We can romatically talk of open and networked and learning and so on but the nourishment of the www is becoming more and more gap driven skills based audit trails punctuated with the odd glimmer of "out".

Well folks .....the fan has stopped. So much shit has been flung at it that the very power source to which the device is plugged into is threatening to blow out. Time for those who know what they know that dont know that they think we wont know ( you know whom I'm talking about ) to hang up their gym shoes and take a long earned rest from online contribution.

After they've relaxed and reflected on their actions long enough they will be taken on the tour of their life. The networked world of the incarcerated is infinetly more scrutinised.

Ps. I dont count myself as part of the techno-blogging elite.....perhaps thats why I'm prepared to be one of the few that say, " I'm an educator and I am not prepared to stand back and watch others get crucified online"

Social Networks : Mis-Communication Technology

Today's been an interesting array of contact from afar.

I'm lost in tags ( RSI labour ) and completely inundated with login's which lead nowhere fast. I'm now a slave to my online identity and my social networks have taken on a new dimension with the onset of LinkedIn and Orkut spicing up the inbox.

Series4 is due out and growing gradually. Suggestions appreciated. Remember.... it's about dumbing things up.

Preparation for tommorow's capability development workshops with colleagues in the networked learning field's of Sydney has begun in earnest. Email's are flooding in with an average relevance content value of between 30-40 %.

I've installed the random delete feature. Random mis-communications often interspace the core community content and I've been using my wiki to learn ways to filter the gym bunnies from the junkies - so to speak. In this day and age of social networking technology their is plenty of glam amongst the glum. One facette interfaces with the other.

Things seem to be revolving and new knowledge nodes are appearing however it appears that many educators follow the same seven year patterns. seven years ago email came into play in our workplaces.

That's how long it's been since I used the term "folksonomies" except this time it appears that I've learnt a tad since my first attempt at articulating the lunancy. It's almost like an itch. We seek ways to connect that which was coined 'early-adoption". For the technology-averse we are simply geeks.......till they understand that they will now need to use it.

Re-shuffling is underway now that Labour's back in at the polls and with a national politic re-structure emminent Teacher Tube might just have a chance.

More emails coming in about the adjustments to politic's and new education ministers supplemented by the odd update on fax machines broken down in remote campus locations.

As always the socialist puritans are pushing against the liberalisation of education into an industry driven, economic facist-rationalist push for cost cutting and agenda serving. Meetings are fraught with who's eating who for dinner and who's paying the rent. I can hear them whispering sweet nothings into the cauliflower ears of those wearing bad suits and spotted ties.

I'm been approached twice this week with people suggesting how I show talk and to whom. They've even given me the agenda items and asked me to fill in the blanks. I'm begining to lose track of who's boss and who's steering the cart before the horse.

It's chaos and MySpace isnt helping. Should I have Beebo'd instead ?

Is there any mathematical reasoning behind all of this or am I simply trying to bring nodes into a more important picture ? There is sense in the adventure but not in the objective.

It may need a whole range of miscommunication to occur for the unconference to grow beyond a circus seeking soul mates.

It has taken six weeks and an awful lot of of arguing and bickering but it finally looks like we have come up with a three stage business plan to be implemented over the next three years.

It seemed like we would never get there with all our differences and the complex nature of it all however, I'm so awfully proud that we got it pinned down and now have something substantial to present at the next ICAC meeting.

WWW3 As PLE : Mark as RSS Mentor

On the agenda at the TALO Swapmeet in Adelaide, Australia blogger colleague Graham Wegner raised ( razed ? ) the ambient tones with his renditions on what for me has become another capitalist push/sell product substantiation in schools and education settings - globally better of for known as the PLE.

Spread liberally throughout his blog is the term PLE for want of a better acronym - search it and look for Barrett.

In a box. One size fits the class. Or a series of spaces scraped into one management system which hopefully plugs into another one two years down the track when the learner graduates from university at the ripe old age of nineteen and assumes a rotating case workers role with the Department Of Community Services as a social worker and re-enrols in the third option they originally chose at the local polytechnic - multimedia mayhem.

Mark van Harmelen does a better job of PLE interrogation than I'll ever have time to afford it. Best I leave it to those who want to discover something through years of research and a Phd.

Better still why not go back a bit further and see what Mark Diggs . Or better still check out this PLE and social networks bibsonomy that makes my already spinning he do a complete 360.
Or check out where the CLCommunity left off whilst we gethered our thoughts and tackled the prims in SecondLife. Or wonder why and what's become of the Web 2.0 debate. Does too much money mean we abandon all sense and make rules as to how to use blogs and wiki's . Erk !

More rules suck big time. For whom the bell tolls.

There's too much out there for me to think that an LMS is a model of anything except for controlling knowledge and effecting admin. I dont care what brand does what - if it dosent transport then yuck. If it dosent allow open digital rights economy and digital media literacy the double yuck.

I consider my PLE as 'alexanderhayes ' - my name, my tag, my PLE. It will never change and I'll never be able to breastfeed.

The internet and all of of it's tendrils are my networked learning engine . I have no need for anything more than access and the ability to export.

I trust that the internet as we know it wont die my life time. I trust in it. The www knows more of me that I know of it.

What we will be battling with is how to integrate things like Zimbra, WikiEducator and BibSonomy into our aged educational architectures.

I concur with Leigh when he states " the internet is my PLE". It's mine too although my web presence probably dates back a little further. Only cause I'm older :-)

One person that REALLY impressed me at the recent TALO Swapmet gig was Janet over at Lucychilli - an apt definitive for clear-cut FOSS and OS advocacy.

Not too say that I did'nt felt any real difference from meeting with Bill Kerr, Graham Wegner, Peter Allen , Al Upton and all the others present. They rock and they roll.

Janet's discussion on copyright, open alliance schools and OWP really blew me away. I wished I'd had time to tell her so. What a mind.

Oh well. That's what the web is for. We are all blogging on the same engine.

Corporal punishment ceased to be in my secondary school in Year Nine. Hardly enough time to read Puberty Blues or get hard on's in shaggin' wagon's in an era of brown and orange sleek laminex.

I got three of the cane ( three sturdy whacks for swinging in my chair ) that year.

It's a paradox that I now attend meetings of similarly inculcated educational TALO technologists, today, here at the TALO Swapmeet here in Adelaide, even if Bill Kerr would have us think we are a pose of dis-similar and disparate theorists and educational philosophers who exhibit the same admired nad referenced disfunctionality.

On a more pertinent note.

I'd like to thank sincerely Graham Wegner for providing me with accomodation whilst I'm here in Adelaide. It's an honour to meet Graham and his family and to speak with him about the morereal core issues of what it means to be an educator these days. I dont often get the oppportunity to kick back and discuss how to grow capability development without sounding like a completely disconnected wanker. Five stars. It's the reality that the network exists :-)

We visited the CBC and the Technology School Of The Future here in Adelaide ( on the way home from eating and celebrating impending marraiges ). From what I could make out in the dark it looks like a casino complete with Gregorian dorics, tinsel and the odd wisp of naive technology averse politic. Not that I'm one to comment on other interstate jurisdictions.

We got the cane because we dared to ask ..........but why ?

We smarted from the podium enhanced swip-swish and secretly revelled in it's clandestine fetish. Tell me you didnt and I'll prove you did / do. If nothing ......to be fair..............else it gave us cause to be dungeon masters and leather clad bears who climbed the social e-learning neptotistic tender list licking the honeypots of the social WASPS'S and DINKS'S.

As fate would have it here in NSW Australia we struggle with an education system that honours keeping learners locked into LMS's and given half a chance they'd be throwing away the key also. What's with all the fear ? Sure there's an election coming up and probably many re-structures to waste on the faces of the fairy's who prance and pomp as Ministers and Magicians.

I wonder at how many clandestine OWP bloggers are out there building brilliance and engaging the minds of their students in real and relevant digital literacies. Heaven forbid the powers to be realised. What's a blog I heard a senior staffer ask the other day ?

Tempted to retort with 'poo'. A bit like ' computers say no'.

Check this marvel out and failing that dip your toes into this characters ramblings. Where do they get the inspiration from and why am I feeling so despondant about a sector that would rather provide rule and regulations for Bloggers disguised as guidelines and good news stories.

Make's me ever increasingly sick and more determined to take up fly fishing in business case meetings. Failing that I'll create more opportunities that mix business with treasure.

missprofe : Blogging Paradigms or e-Ciphering in Lagtime

The dilemna of having too many blogs has never really been an issue for me rather how to avoid treating them as my "book".

I've got a zillion ways of saying the same thing however I'm discovering a little more of late on how to avoid the usual hiccups of stale air and petulance and it's got me to thinking. This big page forces me to fill it. A Wordpress text field is even bigger.

The del.icio.us field is an interesting space though and Sean's linkblog is a great example of how we could use this in an educational context. I'm liking his new blog mainly for it's 'core" value - one-stop.

It's interesting also that the need for a bigger text field and the ultimate PLE still comes into play. It's a bit like have set of Encyclopedia Brittanica's and nowhere to burn them in......some much info. and yet so redundant in form until you think of content creatively.

Aussie Culture : My Lebanese Family

I had the privilege of being invited to a family wedding on the weekend held in traditional Lebanese wedding style and form and I can only but say I was stunned with everything - the beauty, the generosity, the love and breadth of this amazing Aussie cultural event.

Hundreds of people, hundreds of kids.

The whole event really has got me thinking again about the beautiful ways in which Australian culture adopts, adapts to and grows with the many cultures of the world. I grew up in a narrow culturally lacking bigoted group of teenage thugs. To meet with men my own age and to think of the disastorous things that occured in the Shire in the early 80's........and then again in the not so distant dark past.

Such beauty.......such beautiful things have grown from times of angst and lack of understanding. I do hope our unions make for a strong nation and that we consider how to love one another and live with grace and with respect. My Blip.Tv account shows some of the amazing dancing I learnt at the leileya.

Only one event marred the night's reception. Me. I objected to a racially motivated hate comment at my table and took the offending party outside and corrected the offender - verbally although my limits of dark Celt had been reached.

I must concentrate on beauty.

Given that other sources are about as dry as the over-arching matraich's proverbial, it's a sure hit parade for coaches and conundramata to suck on the global nipple of transmissable electronica, to parade innovation as a set-top-box of cool fools and maggot infested short skirte3d short-sightedness.

Then there is the silence. The lack of contribution to those communities that fueled pre-research competitive honeypots.

Heaven help those roped into Sharepoints and LMS alleyways that screw-over whats left of any morsel of pre-election mdash ministerials. I'm not interested in your hollow invitations, your sheer sneer, your boring-as-batcrap claptrap of personal digital assonance.

Print this and stick it fair square.

Your posturings, post free-wi-fi, will be no more revered than the ice-blue tutu you buried in your mammies prom queen cupboard. I despise your lead , your bleed and your greed.

Un-Learning : The Effects of my Social Re-Conditioning

I'm enjoying logging in via Google.

Pretty soon I expect that privilege in my workplace may not be a reality so I may have to revert to my "secure" server.

Till then the story goes on and I continue to try and find ways to convince those who care to listen for a moment or two about the power of the networked and worldwide web. As a teacher in itself.

The worlds largest machine. Something that wont go away. Conditioning me to think otherwise is pointless and I've spent far too long buried in capability building projects that would suggest that this learning is both empowering and relevant.

As for "un-learning ", as a concept, as a term, as a reference point or as a way to define a process here's some thoughts which I've dropped into weblogg- ed as follows;

"....The notion of "un-learning" in itself bothers me.

I'm taken with all the ways in which you posit "un-learning" as a term to positively build accord with educators seeking ways out of the bureaucratic process of learning however ......

There seems to be something implied that we need to remove learning and replace it with another form or action or indeed terminology to re-authenticate that which went before, for the better good of those who had experienced it.

I'm more of the opinion that one occurs and the other shapes and finds function for it. No sooner than it takes shape then the other finds ways to re-frame the former.

It is grounded in human behaviour or some would say in networked technology that is begining to think for itself. Maybe it's what some are defining as technology-driven user learning experience, complete with an anonymous avatarian dependent user interface - faceless yet inextricably desirable.

Number crunching and money spinning.

Personally, and with great respect to your ideals of what constitutes a healthy learning environment, my take is that "un-learning" is reductionist in inference, conditional and seeking to forge new traits in individuals to challenge their present reality.

All good if indeed the learning that's incurred is in no ways sought of by the imposing value or system seeking it's removal.

Particularly in an environment which learners themselves regard the provision of mediated electronic and practical experience as redundant. Not reflexcive of their understandings of the world at large.

My take on learning however is that its grounded in a reality, often subject to ridiculous variants in context where individuals may break ranks, cross floors, disrupt and interject and generally appear to be "un-learning" if I dare coin the term for only this one occasion.

I'm all for new ways of working but not at the expense of learning experiences irrespective of how I choose to frame them in the now. Garunteed in ten years from now I'll have reframed them differently again as will others.

Divorce has taught me so much about what marraige entails. Death has unravelled much about life itself.

To find ways to "un-learn" either would be negating something quite beautiful and sublime all in the same instant.

The concept governing the casting of the shackles that threaten to stifle learning is in my opinion more on the money. Not learning in itself - no matter what the result nor how tedious the process.

The process of learning sure can be seen in as much ripping down the sand castle as building it however one does not follow the other - not always anyway.

Finding ways to "un-function" however, both as a term , as a reference point would be more in line with other pedagogical referencing floating in this vast e-ther of debate. I dont find "un-learning" at all strength based in it's form however "un-functioning" as well holds inference.

That might mean we would be giving up at a more base level and grounding ourselves as humans first before struggling to cast off what we had constructed to define ourselves as in the first place.

For me the whole premise of learning is fluid - learning is NOT the antecedent foe of "un-learning".

We may well be seeking escape from servile information architecture inculcating captive audiences with falsely attributed research authenticated learning traits re-inforced with behavioural indoctrination, classist belief systems and controlled networked knowledge portals.

I'm as tired of my current conditioning as an Online Networked Information Technologist as I was as an Artist. As an Educator however I'm piecing the two together and learning that I'm neither.

The only thing I learnt as a trainee teacher was what I had'nt learned as a student in primary grade. Sixty-six students started the degree and twenty-two completed the degree in the chronological flow of the teaching pattern. How many completed it before me is a mystery.

My Communications Lecturer now teaches my teenage daughter. I suspect my daughter will learn the same - un-learn ?

For me only the "ism's" remain the same.

The terminology shifts and the machine that mediates our learning continues to grow bigger.

The acronym's differing slightly however the drive to discover more without "un-learning" is more my goal - for now.

It's peaceful here in the country and yet the silence is golden and deafening. Perhaps I'm forcing myself into another bout of self-imposed "un-learning".

Time Out

As always I'm appalled that we have to revert back to behaviourist principles to govern what could otherwise be a democratic process when it comes to public funded online education forums.

It sickens me to think that after all the discussions relating to the ability of a network comprised of groups to self moderate that we are now back to the dunce chair principle. I dont recall requesting such a barbaric inclusion nor do I support it - whatsoever.

I posit that the next iteration of such rules will include the following;

Punishment

As requested by our members we have now set up a 'punishment' area. This area is for times when discussions between our members become too heated and personal for acceptance by the general community and we shall administer punishment accordingly. We ask that members who are moved to this 'punishment' space take a day or two to consider the ramifications of their dis-engaged behaviourist moderation.

Success : The Right Combination

In a matter of a few months time I'll be contemplating how to best engage a vast number of people ( adults ) via an array of new and emergent communication technologies in an effort to broaden their e-learning horizons and hopefully engage them in things which would even confound Confucious.

Many things like my contact with Teemu have gone to the wayside - how does one keep up with it all ? I suspect much of it does not. Whats happened with all the bright ideas and the well meaning projects and all that stuff that just slips into the too hard basket ? What's Leigh up to and how much choclate is Nancy White eating ? It seriously raises the guilts in me.

More of the same and more of things unknown. The latter a little more this year which makes it exciting and worth every bit of the extra hours. I must admit - I do love my job. Who wouldnt ? I think it's just a matter of avoiding the office public service bitchin' politic.

Well woopee you may say........... but for me it's the begining of something new, fresh and lacking in the familiar stench of too few computers, cramped and shared desks and the odd rotting banana thrown into the back of the aging fridge in the Literacy 101 department. I kind of loved that job too. Most of the time.

The fact of the matter is that U-learning is on the dramatically on the rise and mobile phones are less and less keypad oriented although it all makes for good digital-data entry. In fact I watched a couple of kids on the train the other day operating the SMS facility of their phoned so proficiently that I felt compelled to ask them whether they would be interested in court stenogarphy. I'm sure text shorthand would be even quicker than writing and then re-transposing it. Failing that it could be a podcast or vodcast or.......

I say adults, because in this sensitive time here in Sydney, Australia it would seem that with an election looming close nothing can be left to chance ie. all activities befitting networked learning had better be enclosed in a digital walled garden. The osmotic effect can only go so far before DET legal kicks in the doors.. I'm not so green so it would seem. The open web publishing domain and contribution to world knowledge is still apparently feared........... much like death - the unknown is courted and humans might even discover something or even uncover something of the unknown. Or indeed the known. Via Google. Or YouTube.

I look around the world and feel inspired when I read the blogs of people like Graham Wegner and Kimberley A. Cofino as they refuse to consider anything that would stifle and retard the young minds in their charge. How is it that educators with half an inkling as to the longevity and sustainability of their chosen occupation choose to imbed learning as an open , networked and relationship building exercise ? because they care ?

Considering that kids these days dont have any idea of what Green Eggs and Ham are , it would make sense to give them as many clues as to where they may choose to access their knowledge, give them the opportunity to find ways to believe of things in ( not things to believe in ), ways to work but not working ways.

Without harping on any further in this passe read/write web I feel like I'm making inroads into the whole idea of playing in the "open" field yet for some reason I keep striking a loosly strung chord somewhere in it all. Generally people's spirits are on the rise and global pollution is less of an issue now that it's too expensive to drive to work and more fun to listen to podcasts on the bus and ignore everyone within two metres of one's body mass.

I think I'm going to start wearing things other than black. Start reading other peoples blogs rather than just going to Technorati and or seeing who's say hello via the digital intray.

Everyone's connected and yet who's got the time to say hello anymore. I'm still trying to find the right combination.

Conference Dis-Organisation

I'd like to speak to the post of Stephen Downe's which relates to how he thinks a conference should be organised.

S. ".....The structure would be more like a market or a fair. Mostly, there would not be a schedule. "
A. That would fit with the notions raised by Carnival of the Mobilists. Nice option and one that entertains most of us except those wearing tight fitting safari suits or ill fitting cardigans.

S. ".....Participants would certainly not get a schedule; organizers would have a bit of one, in order to choreograph the event."
A. Love it. Choreography is much what it's like .....dancing around, mark making and trying to make meaning from the chaos in the street. No real grasp or control......flow theory stuff.

S. ".......The conference area itself would consist of a largish central area with various side areas with more or less privacy (the presumption is that while people will want to go to the side to chat, etc., they won't want to cut themselves off completely from the main event)."
A. Hmmmmmm.......that would allow small groups to break up and form central performance areas or vice versa.....coming together like mercury.

S. "......The main area would itself have various types of things, including:- presentation booths - these are not lined up in rows, but are rather islands, round, surrounded by the attendees - exhibitors don't get a booth for the whole conference, rather, just for certain time slots (lots of rotation in the booths) - at any given time there will be many of these booths in operation - some of these (especially those in strategic areas) are no more than soapboxes, whereon a person stands and makes his/her pitch- bearpits - where from time to time famous people are surrounded by an audience, where - instead of presenting a lecture - they answer questions tossed in by the audience- demo labs - again, like the booths, nobody owns these, they are used for a certain amount of time - they consist of a large screen and about a dozen workstations - need lots of these, in various configurations - in the open, so people can stand around and watch- a great big wall where people can put up any sort of notice or advertisement they please (people who spam the board will have their messages removed)- electronic games and activities (could even make it possible to win 'tokens' by playing and use the tokens to auction things - check your local laws) -- there would absoluetly have to be a Wii area - but also, there are many video-cam games (eg. the video cam boxing game), have those set up as well, whatever games people want to play- Big screens everywhere - some of them are showing the games (especially the hockey games, especially the finals from the conference-long tournament), others are showing the conference 'backchannel' where participants (you need a conference login) post their thoughts- The announcers, of course, on the speaker system, letting people know when an event is about to take place - a '10 minute keynote', a 'Flash video demo', the 'George Siemens bearpit', the 'EA Hockey semi-finals', 'the Wii-learn SIG in the alcove...- Entertainment, including mainstage shows at noon and in the evening, side stage workshops (esp. with electronic music tools), wandering minstrals, jugglers- The Vendor's Parade- plenty of tables and chairs throughout, where people can sit and work or chat- wireless and numerous ethernet ports with the bandwidth to back them upThere would be numerous side areas, including (pay for meals and coffee, etc., with conference vouchers)- coffee shops (how much would Starbucks pay to have a coffee shop there?) and cafes (meals tend to be 'ad hoc', not huge 'everybody eats at once' factory-style conference dinners)- computer stores (Future shop? Apple)- bookstores - a proper bookstore, not just a few titles on a table- various types of pubs, some open and lively, others more like lounges, others with quiet out-of-the-way nooks- very quiet areas, with couches for sleeping- Art galleries / events (local artists are given a space and told to 'create')You get the idea...Now then, what we want participants to do is to add to this, in any way they can - we would want lots of ways participants can contribute...- code jams - where coders create a new applications- the participants' art gallery - any art, any way- the conference radio station / podcast (which plays on speakers in various locations, including some of the cafes, as well as online (of course))- 99-second presentationsAgain - from the participant's point of view, none of this is scheduled ahead of time - what they are intended to do is to arrive and follow what interests themWhat about papers? After all, that's how many people get funding to travel to conferences...- the conference book and DVD - participants will be asked to come and, at some point during the event (probably have to sign up for a slot) go to a studio and record a presentation of their work - they can also bring in audio or video clips to add - these will be facilitated by program directors and hosts - the idea here is to make the presentations less formal, not just a person reading, but rather a person showing, being interviewed, interacting with the audience, etc -- a lot of this would also be the material used for the conference radio and shown on some of the video screens throughout - after the show, you can but the book/dvd from Lulu- Typically conferences take place in converntion halls and the like -- and there's nothing wrong with that -- but it's worth nothing that a conference as described here can fit into pretty much any (large) location - school, college building, small town, whatever...

A. Sounds like where Elearning 06 attempted to get to last year and where Elearning 07 is headed in 2007. I love the devolved nature of these images you paint where learning and interaction preferences people ahead of pomp and ceremony.

What gets me though Stephen is that I'm likely to attend about 50 educational booth style, sage-on-stage expert driven side show alleys this year and the organisers of these events find it incredibly difficult to place your ideas within the realities of their given restraints. I'm taken with your concept and I'm doing my best to build bridges over rivers and turn groups into networks and it's a nerve racking experience........I'm not sure a great deal of it sticks but it's definetly worth the effort.

I feel like I'm part of a learning ecosphere that honours only a chosen few. The paradox is that I've been asked today to present the highlights of the last two years of learning within my e-for-e-learning area as a bunch of graphs, charts and tables.
